Boys basketball: Osakis wins marathon game over Royalton

Luke Imdieke

The Osakis boys basketball team has won nine straight games and has had a flair for the dramatic in the process over the last two wins.

After needing two overtimes to beat Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Feb. 6, Osakis and Royalton went to four overtimes on Tuesday before the Silverstreaks secured a 73-71 win.

“When you play four overtimes, there are going to be a lot of key plays that people need to make,” Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “Carter Rost saved a game-winning layup for Royalton by hustling back and getting a steal. Kobie Lara had some deflections and steals that disrupted their offense. Reid (DeWenter) made a big three to tie it. Riley (Werven) had a huge putback on offense. Luke (Imdieke) did a great job guarding (senior guard Adam) Olson all game, and we had good looks from our posts in high-low and screen-and-roll action.”

The Silverstreaks shot 52 percent (27-51), even on a night when they hit just 4-of-17 threes.

“They made shots too, so it was another fun, stressful, exciting, frustrating and all the other emotions you can think of were felt during that game,” Hoelscher said. “In the end, a win is a win.”

Osakis (15-5, 9-0 Prairie Conference) showed it could fight back in this one. The Royals (12-8, 4-4 Prairie) led 33-22 before the Silverstreaks outscored them by that exact same score in the second half. Osakis had chances to put things away but shot just 15-of-28 from the line.

“Royalton used their strength by going inside and we didn't have an answer for them,” Hoelscher said of the first half. “We got out and ran the floor in transition the second half and got to the rim and created shots for shooters. Free throws were our Achilles heel again as we could've finished off the game several times, but we allowed them to hang around.”

Sophomore guard Daniel Savageau finished with 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting for Osakis. Imdieke added 12 points and seven assists, and Josh Peterka and DeWenter each added 11 points to help secure the win.
