Girls basketball: Dutchmen defeat Streaks, 60-51

The Osakis girls basketball team started to get a taste for winning for two games before heading to Melrose for a Section 6, Class AA competition.

After digging themselves a hole early in the game against the Dutchmen, the Silverstreaks couldn’t recover. Melrose (6-7) took the win, 60-51.

"A tough loss for the team,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “We had chances many times throughout the game, but defensively we couldn't get the stops we needed. I felt the difference in the game was our shooting percentage and getting outrebounded.”

The Silverstreaks shot at 34.6 percent (18-of-52) compared to the Dutchmen’s 48.9 percent. Melrose out-rebounded Osakis 35 to 24.

Senior Lauren Savageau had a team leading 18 points followed closely by sophomore Madisen Johanson with 17 points. Bree Timmerman had 14 points for the Streaks, including four three-pointers.

“It was good to see Bree Timmerman knock down some shots early in the game for us, which kept us close,” Kalpin said. “She definitely had her best game of the year.”

The Silverstreaks return home for the next three games with a 3-8 overall record. Barnesville (8-2) is the first to head to Osakis on Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

“We have to learn from these games and try to correct the mistakes and focus on what we did well,” Kalpin said. “We did some really good things against a much bigger team.”
