Girls basketball: Silverstreaks hold onto an early lead over Pierz

Tianna Stanek

The Osakis girls basketball team built up an early lead in Pierz on Friday night and never looked back, heading to a 48-40 Section 6, Class AA victory.

"A great road win for the girls," Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. "With us playing the night before, I was a little concerned on how we'd come out and play. I thought the girls did a nice job getting out to an early lead and keeping the lead throughout the game. This was a good team win for us and also a good section win. "

Osakis (10-10, 6-1 Prairie Conference) shot 40.5 percent from the field against the Pioneers (6-16). Senior Lauren Savageau had a game-leading 23 points and four steals. Junior Tianna Stanek got 12 points up on the board and grabbed two steals.

"On the offensive end, we were patient and had good possessions," Kalpin said. "It was good to see us move the ball the way we did and adjust to what they were doing defensively."

Sophomore Madi Johanson snagged a team-leading 10 rebounds and had two steals and seven points.

"I was very pleased with our defensive effort again tonight," Kalpin said. "The girls did a nice job of rotating defensively and playing good team defense."

Minnewaska Area (11-11) is up next on the schedule as the Lakers head to Osakis Feb. 15 for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
